Ask Sam: GG & Beyond
[Written April 2019]
Hello fellow GlamourGals! I hope everyone’s been doing well as we approach May. Last Ask Sam covered #PasstheBackpack, an important tradition for every leader to ensure their chapter runs long after they graduate. Deciding who will take over chapter leadership positions means you can focus on what matters most: Getting that diploma!
GlamourGals has hot pink graduation cords that you can readily purchase from our website! They signify your commitment to the GlamourGals mission to end senior isolation and loneliness while creating intergenerational friendships. Also, they look pretty neat!
So once you graduate, you might be asking yourself the same question as Anonymous in NY:
How can I stay involved in GG after I graduate from high school?
For all GlamourGals entering college, have no fear, GG is here!
Did you know that GlamourGals has over 20 college chapters and growing? Going to makeovers doesn’t need to end at high school. In fact, many college courses include a community service requirement. When I was in college, I went back to the same senior home my GlamourGals chapter went to and volunteered there to fulfill my required hours. I even got to see the new members of the GG chapter come to do their makeovers!
Starting a college chapter is a bit different from starting a chapter in high school. Colleges are bigger with even more responsibilities to handle from deciding whether or not to take that 7:30 AM class or that 7:30 PM class to figuring out your ideal major. You’ll find college to be one of the first major steps towards your future, and it can be a bit overwhelming.
But don’t let this stop you from bringing GlamourGals to your new environment! GG National is here to help you get started every step of the way.
Writing up a club constitution and having neat materials to have at your club fair booth are things we can help with. Keep us involved in emails at contact@glamourgals.org or even email amanda@glamourgals.org for a Club Fair Care Package as mentioned in this previous Ask Sam about Club Fairs.
Though if starting your own college chapter isn’t possible with the amount of work you’ll need to do as a college student…
There are other ways to keep involved in GlamourGals:
1. Join our Mailing List
We at GG love to keep all those involved in GG up to date with what we’re doing: Whether it is about hosting MegaMakeovers, future GG student event volunteering opportunities, or giving shout outs to chapters that are going above and beyond. If you would like to stay in the know about GG, our mailing list is the perfect first step.
Being on the GG mailing list is how I found out about volunteer opportunities after I graduated college. And now I’m able to share my GG wisdom with you all with using this blog. You never know what your curiosity could lead to!

2. Internships
Did you know that we have GG Internships throughout the fall and spring semesters? As well as in the summer?
Our interns are college students who come to learn the ins and outs of running a non-profit organization while having the full GG experience of going to makeovers and not only coming to our events, but helping us plan them too! GG Internships offer many networking opportunities like our mentorship program that aims to connect you to everyone who helps GG running in tip-top shape, from business executives to our CEO and founder, Rachel Doyle herself!
If you’re a college student and would like to become an intern for the upcoming fall semester, learn more about how to apply here.
3. LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a great way to keep in contact with GlamourGals while also engaging in the importance of networking! Many former volunteers and interns keep in contact with GlamourGals through LinkedIn, receiving important professional knowledge from our GG Articles and seeing opportunities we share from the friends of the foundation. If you ever wanted to know whether we’re hiring or our plans for the future of GG, LinkedIn is the place to be.
This is why it’s so important to earn the Intergenerational Service Award your senior year of high school. Earning this award gives you the ability to request a LinkedIn Endorsement from GG National! Using LinkedIn, we can further validate the skills you possess and honed from your time as a GG Volunteer. Skills like communication, time management, and event planning are all skills you can list on LinkedIn that are readily viewed by potential employers.
We at GG National want all GlamourGals to thrive and succeed! Meet us halfway by keeping in contact: We love to hear about how you’re doing.
That’s all for now!
All GlamourGals can earn one service hour by answering this journal prompt.
GG National looks forward to reading your answers! Email us at chapters@glamourgals.org if you have any questions. We’re here to help!
