Companionship and Resilience

Britton K., a volunteer for the Peachtree City GlamourGals Chapter, describes what she learned from a specific experience with a senior at a volunteering event.

Volunteering with GlamourGals has provided me with countless memorable experiences, but one in particular stands out in my mind. During a senior home visit, I had the opportunity to spend time with a woman named Mary. She was in her nineties and had been living in the facility for several years. She was soft-spoken and seemed hesitant to engage with me at first, but as we started talking, I could see a sparkle in her eyes that suggested there was much more to her than met the eye.

As we chatted about our lives, Mary shared with me stories of her youth, her family, and the challenges she had faced throughout her long life. I listened intently, marveling at her resilience and her grace in the face of adversity. I could tell that our conversation was meaningful to her, and that in some small way, I was able to provide her with companionship and comfort.

As our visit drew to a close, Mary took my hand and thanked me for spending time with her. I could feel the warmth of her touch and the depth of her gratitude, and in that moment, I realized just how much of an impact our interaction had on both of us. Through GlamourGals, I was able to connect with Mary in a way that was both deeply personal and profoundly uplifting, and I left that day feeling grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life.

The experience with Mary had a lasting impact on me, and I continue to be inspired by the resilience, grace, and strength of the seniors I have met through GlamourGals. Their stories have taught me the value of human connection and the importance of listening, empathy, and compassion in our interactions with others.
