Lessons and Manicures
Melona J., a GlamourGals volunteer at Mount St. Dominic Academy, recounts a unique experience with a senior during one of the volunteer events.
My most memorable GG senior home visit was Manicure Day. I had the pleasure of giving five seniors manicures. It was an enjoyable afternoon full of fun stories and good company. The most impactful interaction of the afternoon was with a senior named Lina. She told me that I was giving her the first manicure she’s ever received. I asked her why she had never gotten her nails done before. Her response sparked a relatable feeling. She told me she was a diabetic and her fingernails used to be brittle and frail, causing her to be insecure about her fingers. I understood her insecurity, although the situation may not have been the same. I too was insecure about my fingernails; my anxiety caused me to pick and chew them until raw. I would buy long sleeve shirts two times my size to cover my hands. Hearing Miss Lina share her story made me feel foolish. She chose the most beautiful shade of blue for her nails. I even did a smiley face design to reflect how she made me feel. She taught me to appreciate my outward beauty and not be insecure about things I cannot control. Every day, when I feel as if I do not look my best, I stop and ask myself if I can change it within 5 minutes. If not, I let it go. Miss Lina gave me the courage to be satisfied with my immediate appearance.
