Everlasting Intergenerational Friendships
Madelyn L., a volunteer at the Cinnaminson High School GlamourGals Chapter, tells us about her new friendship with a senior at a volunteering event.
During my visits to the Riverview Estates, I not only connected with upperclassmen to form relationships with my own peers, but I expanded my connections to the senior residents in my community as well. One of the first seniors that I painted nails for was Nacy. She came in with an attitude, ready to get the manicure then leave promptly. Little did she know that our once monthly visits would quickly evolve into a friendship that lasted more than four years. Each time, I had the privilege of spending time with Nancy, her sarcastic optimism always put a smile on my face. Seeing her be able to thrive despite the dull environment surrounding her has influenced me to believe I can do the same no matter where I end up. Especially important for my unknown future path, having Nancy as my role model has demonstrated the benefits of living in the moment and having a lighthearted mindset to combat the unfavorable situations in life. Throughout this experience, the person I am becoming has undoubtedly been shaped by Nancy’s advice: use your legs while you still can, stay with your first husband, and make sure to paint all the way to the cuticle during a manicure. Nancy and I are not perfect and may never be, but the intergenerational advice that she has bestowed upon me has been the perfect and necessary change to my outlook on life and will forever hold a valuable place in my heart.
