The Power of Kindness
Leah A., Bloomfield High School Chapter Vice President, explains how GlamourGals has taught her the power of kindness and community.
Being a GlamourGals volunteer influenced me in ways that I never thought possible. The most important thing that I have taken away is the power of kindness. Though it may seem simple, kindness is hard to come across in today’s world and that is what truly sets me apart as a leader. To me, being a leader is about the actions you take and the examples that you set for others. Going to the senior home has taught me the skill of being able to sit and listen to others. While it is important to share your ideas, listening makes a leader shine, because it allows for a greater understanding of peers and more efficient problem-solving.
Seeing how much you can brighten someone’s day with simple actions has truly impacted me a lot. I joined GlamourGals as a freshman in highschool, and, at the time, I wasn’t as mature and never realized how far kindness could go. I thought that people only cared about themselves, so why should I take time to make an extra effort? After my first visit, my views were completely changed. Now, when a visit comes up, I look forward to spending time with the seniors. Not only does my kindness help them, but they help me to feel grounded and refreshed from the constant rush of life, especially with the stresses of senior year. When I think of the person that I was freshman year to the person I am now, I have seen remarkable growth, and I attribute this to my GlamourGals experience.
GlamourGals is important to my community because it allows our chapter to come together to serve others. At my high school, GlamourGals is a prominent club, and the whole school participates. Our Valentine's Visit is the biggest event of the year for us; we get a bunch of carnations, and some of the boys from our school come to hand them out with us. Not only do the seniors love it but so does the chapter as a whole. We all work together to make sure the visit goes seamlessly for the seniors. This shows the power of kindness and compassion, not only through one person, but through unity and community. Some of the seniors have lived and grown in my town, so they love that we come from the high school to visit them. We all are connected to each other with the stories and interactions that we share with each other. GlamourGals has shown me that when different generations come together, there is always so much to learn from each other.
