Beyond Just the Makeover
Ava L., Tottenville High School, Chapter President and finalist, reflects on how her experience not only benefited the seniors, but most importantly her too.
Throughout my experience with GlamourGals, I have embraced the true beauty of serving seniors within my community, striving to go above and beyond to create the best experience possible. While makeovers and sharing jokes are essential components, I have come to realize that the true service lies in the unforgettable bonds I have formed along the way, not just with seniors but also with the incredible group of volunteers I have worked so closely alongside. Incorporating the hosting and planning of various events throughout their visits demonstrates the true meaning behind “beyond just the makeovers.” We organized gift baskets assembly events with certain themes that we knew each senior would enjoy. Each basket was accompanied by a personally written My Dear Friend card. With the support of the Chapter Creativity Fund, I always made sure everyone had a good time, free from technology distractions.
Words can not express how thankful I am for discovering GlamourGals as a leadership opportunity. My grandmother was diagnosed with dementia in 2022, which significantly impacted her social life and confidence. Despite academic success, I struggled socially until I became involved in student organizations, such as GlamourGals, which became my safe haven. In October 2023, I discovered GlamourGals, and its mission resonated deeply with my daily life caring for my grandmother. Inspired by her, I founded a chapter at my high school, starting with just four girls. Our first meeting attracted over 50 girls. After carefully learning how to manage large groups, develop PR skills, and organize events, I gained the confidence I needed to create a passionate community dedicated to giving seniors the same love I give my grandmother. This experience has inspired me to pursue a career aligned with the GlamourGals mission.
