A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way
Grace N., President of the Palm Desert High School Chapter, shares how an encounter with a senior taught her that a little kindness can go a long way.
“Are you my daughter?”, were the words that came out of a senior's mouth as I was leaving for a visit. I walked over to her, and we talked for a while until the nurse came over. When I asked the nurse where her real daughter was, I was informed that her daughter had passed away while she was in highschool. The nurse said that I resemble her daughter and that was probably why the senior motioned for me to come over. This interaction allowed me to realize that it does not take a lot to make an impact on someone’s life or make their day brighter. While I was free to leave the visit, I decided to stay and talk with her. I made her happy and allowed her to imagine what one more moment with her daughter would be like. Going on these visits is a small act of kindness during my day, and I always look forward to going on them. I always leave feeling grounded and accomplished.
Being able to be a part of a club, like GlamourGals, has been so rewarding. Being able to help organize events has meant a lot for me, knowing that I am helping others get involved in such a great cause. As I enter this next stage of my life, I leave my GG chapter knowing that they will continue to spread love, kindness, and empathy within the senior homes and community. Sitting with that senior for a few extra moments will forever remind me that kindness can be shown in small gestures and still make an equally as big or even bigger impact on a person.
