Finding Purpose Through Service

Avry W. of the University Of South Florida Chapter shares how GlamourGals has affected her goals.

Volunteering with GlamourGals has been more than just a way to give back. It’s been a glimpse into the kind of future I’m working toward. I’m currently on the path to becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), with a goal of specializing in grief therapy. My chosen path was shaped by my own experiences with loss, but it’s been strengthened through moments of connection during my GG visits.

Each time I sat beside a senior and offered a kind word, a manicure, help with the craft, or even just quiet company, I saw the power of my presence. I’ve learned that grief isn’t always loud or obvious because many don't allow themselves to mourn. Sometimes it looks like loneliness. Sometimes it’s hidden behind a smile. My own grief has taught me how to meet people where they are with compassion, patience, and an open heart.

These experiences have helped me build real, human skills like active listening and how to be present without trying to fix everything. These are the exact skills I’ll need as a grief therapist. I don’t just want to be a therapist. I want to be someone who makes people feel seen, heard, and less alone in their hardest moments. GlamourGals gives me the chance to practice that, and I know I’ll carry these lessons with me into my career and beyond.
