Building Confidence Through Visits
Macie B., President of the Henderson High School chapter reflects on how a conversation with a senior resident inspired her to seek out more leadership opportunities in her community.
The days leading up to my first ever senior home visit were spent in anxious agony. I soon found, however, that this was unwarranted. That winter, I met Sue, a resident who I would come to know very well. Her personality was dynamic, and conversation with her was easy. I found myself growing more confident with each word I said, and learned how invaluable memories are through her reminiscent stories. From that day forward, I stepped up in the community—inspired by the incredible and worldly life of Sue. GG continued to help me build my confidence at monthly meetings, and when I decided to run for president, the club offered me overwhelming support.
I have since become a finalist in my school's speaking competition and even been personally asked to deliver a speech at graduation—things that I would never have been able to do without the confidence I found through GG. I take each meeting as an opportunity to inspire members to boost their confidence—just how GG boosted mine two years ago. I will always cherish my time with GlamourGals and be grateful for the opportunities they have opened up for me; each senior resident has broadened my horizons and introduced me to a previously unknown walk of life.
