Sweet Moments of Friendship

Emma J, a Volunteer with the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, speaks about the beautiful relationships the seniors she spends time with have cultivated.

Today was one of those makeovers that really just stood out amongst the others. We only had three ladies today and two volunteers including myself, but you don't always need a big crowd to have a good time. The ladies kept picking on each other, like really close friends do, and giggling as they joked about how they were going to "go find a man now.”

After two of the ladies had left and one sat waiting to let her nails dry, she told us how before she came to this assisted living she thought she would be okay living on her own. Then she proceeded to tell us how lonely that had turned out to be for her and how coming to a facility like this has allowed her to meet such good friends like the two she had been joking with.

I think this just goes to show how important it is for us all to make new friends, no matter what stage of life you are in. Cultivating new friendships allows us to grow as people and it oftentimes brings out the best versions of ourselves. Personally, I am so thankful to come back to these amazing ladies time and time again and witness these sweet moments of friendship. They remind me of what's really important and allow me to take a moment to appreciate all of the incredible friendships in my life.
