2021 Glammy Scholarship Winner: Catrell Jackson
Aberdeen, MD, May 25, 2021 — Catrell Jackson, a senior at Aberdeen High School, was this year’s recipient of the $1,000 Mary Weiford Outstanding Volunteer Award. Awarded by the GlamourGals Foundation, this scholarship was presented virtually to Jackson at the 17th Annual Glammy Scholarship Awards.
Each year, the Mary Weiford Outstanding Volunteer Award is presented to a volunteer who has positively impacted or been impacted by a senior they have visited. They bring joy into the lives of a senior and connect with them in a special way through games, makeovers, and manicures. Catrell will be attending Mary Baldwin University this fall as an English major where she plans to use the social skills she learned while volunteering with GlamourGals. “I can not only focus more on my education but also make connections with people, just as being in the GlamourGals club taught me,” says Jackson on the benefit of winning the scholarship.
On one of her first experiences working with a senior, Jackson talks about how nervous she was prior to meeting the resident and, frankly, she did not know what to expect. She emerged from the experience even more confident than before, and realized that “people do not need grand gestures to make them happy, just someone to paint their nails.” Jackson talks about the kindness and warmth she received from the senior residents and the down-to-earth conversations she had that she refers back to anytime she’s upset. Not only has Jackson improved her nail painting skills, but her social skills as well, and she plans to stay involved with GlamourGals after graduation.
