Inspiring Leaders and Changing Lives
Kyler B. of Benjamin N. Cardozo High School discusses the importance of GlamourGals and the positive impact that it has had on her life.
The GlamourGals organization is important to my community because it helps lessen the unintentional neglect of our senior citizens. The personal interactions between both the volunteers and seniors can offer joyfully spirited uplifting emotions to everyone. The pandemic has affected the way we interact with each other but we have found new ways to advocate for the seniors. For example, the “My Dear Friend” cards have created a new way to maintain the joy that our service provides for the seniors. The seniors now look forward to the monthly cards coming to them which represent our in person interactions. This was a great way to continue our advocacy for the seniors. Although we now communicate by “My Dear Friend” cards, these cards allow me to make personal notes to the seniors. Sometimes kind words and thoughtful expressions can be a gentle reminder that they are not alone. A warm smile awaits them in the form of descriptive words and colorful emotions in every card.
I have gone above and beyond serving the seniors in my community through my GlamourGals experience. I helped a lady at the nursing home. I had painted her nails. I went to greet her and asked her how her day was going. I helped her choose a nail polish color based on how her day was going thus far. I asked her what color she was feeling. She told me she was feeling yellow. I told her that it was a lovely color and that the color yellow represents happiness. I had asked her why she felt this way, happy. She told me she was happy for this visit and that she was able to get her nails painted. It was something as simple as painting nails that made me want to find other ways to put a smile on someone’s face. It was at that moment I realized the importance of community service which can be uplifting. In future visits I will incorporate the nail polish colors with the jewelry pieces offered to the seniors.
GlamourGals has influenced me as an individual and a leader by uplifting my community and exemplifying good stewardship. There are many ways I can be of service to others which can help with my community’s success. To achieve a successful community will require many participants. My good character input can example to others the character type of a steward. My community service may inspire or encourage others to get involved in the betterment of their community. Stepping up as a Public Relations Officer in my high school's chapter was a milestone accomplishment for me. I was able to showcase authenticity, positivity, and a genuine good natured spirit in this chapter’s role. For instance, my weekly posts on Instagram reflected positivity that was as bright as the summer sun. I shined a bright light as well in my journal entries detailing post service events.
