What Does GlamourGals Mean to Me?
Sophia C., Tiffin University President, details what The GlamourGals Foundation means to her and how her experience as a volunteer led her to interning with us this Spring.
What is the GlamourGals organization? This question is so universal and every person who volunteers with this amazing organization will have a different definition. GlamourGals mission statement on their website is “organizes and supports volunteer chapters in high school and college who provide companionship and our signature program of complimentary beauty makeover to elderly residents in senior care.” In other words, it means to provide companionship and events to residents in senior homes. To be honest, this is only a small portion of what the GlamourGals organization is about.
When I was a freshman in college, it was my first time hearing about GlamourGals. One of the girls who was on my golf team started a chapter at Tiffin University. Although it was primarily just for the golf team. After she graduated it was handed off to someone else and then a year later, I was asked to be President. I was so anxious and nervous because I wanted it to be amazing not just for the residents but the volunteers as well. I first started with not just making it for the TU golf team but as well as campus wide. So many people were excited to join. Next, I wanted our interactions to be pure and fun, just like the experiences that I had my freshman year. Sadly, COVID-19 put a pause to our interactions face to face. Instead we do drop-offs and attempt to zoom calls. Even though we have to do zoom calls instead of face to face and sometimes deal with wifi issues, just to be able to see a smile on the seniors face is something so special that nobody could ever replace in my heart.
So the question that was first asked, “What is the GlamourGals organization?” Well, my answer is GlamourGals is an organization that puts on fun activities for residents in senior homes. Either these activities are playing bingo, having a tea party, painting nails, doing a craft, fashion show, or simply just talking to the residents and hearing their own personal stories. It is an organization that I feel like I could never truly live without. Currently, I am an intern this spring and every day I learn something new about this organization. I hope that reading this blog is something that inspires you too, don’t be afraid to start a chapter at your high school or college. Honestly, it is scary at first but then you get the hang of it and plus being able to interact with seniors who are able to give you advice too, it is something really cool.
