Manicures and Life Stories

Jewel Y., Hofstra University’s Public Relations Officer, recounts the beautiful experiences she’s had visiting seniors last month. She opens up about the heart warming stories they’ve shared with her and how she will always cherish these memories.

On April 1, 2022, volunteers from Hofstra’s GlamourGals & Pals club visited the Hempstead Housing Authority where we painted our seniors’ nails. This particular event was very memorable for me because it was the first time that a GlamourGals photographer/ videographer was present. I had the chance to paint this lovely lady’s nails. She had told me she liked the color of my nails, so she also chose a shade of pink! She told me how her daughter had just started her own hair/makeup business and I thought it was such a great accomplishment for her, especially at such a young age. She also asked me if I worked at a nail salon, (I do not), because she loved the way her nails turned out! I was honored to receive this compliment and was so happy to spend the morning with such a kindhearted person.

On April 29, 2022, members of Hofstra’s GlamourGals & Pals visited Sunrise where we each gave our seniors manicures. I was very touched by Amada, a deaf senior whose nails I had painted. Amada’s family is from Cuba. She wanted a clear coat of nail polish. While I was painting her nails, she saw my (many) rings and told me how much she liked them. I told her that the gold ring she has on in the picture I had uploaded looked stunning. She thanked me and said that she always wears this ring because it makes her feel like her husband is always with here no matter where in the world she may be. This experience was very heart-warming for me because it shows that true love will always prevail. I am beyond grateful to have met Amada and to have made her comfortable enough to share this experience with me. I hope to see her during our next Glamourgals & Pals event so that we can exchange even more interesting life stories!
