A Journey of Compassion and Connection

Hanna P., a Glen Rock High School Chapter Volunteer, shares how joining GlamourGals transformed her perspective, deepened her connections with seniors, and inspired her to combat senior isolation both in her community and beyond.

When I joined GlamourGals, I had no idea how much it would impact the way I think. The first time I volunteered, I was afraid of how to interact with the seniors. My doubt melted away that first day. The people I encountered were friendly and easy to talk to. I began to slowly get to know the members and looked forward to seeing them each month. I enjoyed hearing about their grandkids and chatting about the years of life they have experienced and gone through. I began to realize that they were impacting my life as much as I was impacting theirs.

GlamourGals has opened my eyes to senior isolation. It taught me to have a broader perspective of my community. Recently I was in New York City and noticed a senior citizen counting change to buy a coffee in a deli. Before GlamourGals, I would have been impatient and quickly annoyed that it was taking them so long. But that day, I introduced myself and offered to assist, and I ended up buying her the beverage. This small deed made a difference in her day and mine. This wouldn't have happened without my experiences in GlamourGals.

Soon, I will be leaving my family, my friends, and my seniors for college. As I attended college campus tours, I always asked two questions: Does this university have a GlamourGals chapter? If not, is it possible to start a GlamourGals chapter on campus? Working with GlamourGals is something that has greatly impacted my life, and I will always strive to fight senior isolation.
