A Journey of Compassion and Leadership

Mira S., Cleveland High School Chapter President, describes her transformative journey with GlamourGals, where she has led efforts to bring joy and connection to isolated seniors through beauty makeovers.

In 2020, amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic, I embarked on a journey that would deeply transform me, as an individual and a leader. Joining the Cleveland Chapter of GlamourGals, an organization dedicated to connecting teens with senior citizens through complimentary beauty makeovers and companionship, was a beacon of hope during those challenging times not only for the senior residents.

Starting as a volunteer, I quickly found myself immersed in the mission of spreading joy to seniors, who were particularly vulnerable to isolation. As I took on more responsibilities, transitioning from Vice President to President of our chapter, I realized the importance of bridging the gap between virtual and in-person interactions. Despite the pandemic’s constraints, I was determined to maintain the spirit of our mission.

Finding a new nursing home willing to participate was my first challenge. After numerous calls and navigating through stringent safety protocols, I secured a partnership with Anthology Senior Living. Our focus on memory-care residents presented unique challenges, as the pandemic had intensified their feelings of isolation. However, our commitment to bringing light into their lives never wavered. Over the past two years, we’ve held numerous makeovers, each visit becoming a cherished memory.

One spring afternoon at Anthology Senior Living stands out in particular. I was painting the nails of Jane, a resident battling dementia and Alzheimer's. Despite the fog of memory loss, Jane's eyes sought connection. As I carefully applied the polish, her face lit up with a radiant smile, a testament to the profound impact of small acts of kindness. At that moment, I realized that true service is about these seemingly small yet deeply significant gestures.

This experience has profoundly shaped me. It taught me that leadership is not just about authority but about empathy, compassion, and genuine connection. Listening to and understanding the unique stories of our seniors has made me a leader who values kindness and strives to create meaningful change.

GlamourGals is more than just beauty makeovers; it’s about forming real bonds and bringing warmth and friendship into the lives of our seniors. Our chapter, which welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds, embodies inclusivity and compassion. Over the past four years, I’ve witnessed firsthand how vital this program is, not only for the seniors but also for our community.

Through GlamourGals, we’ve created a space where caring and connection are paramount. The smiles we bring to the faces of our seniors and the joy we share in their company are the true rewards of our efforts. This journey has not only brightened their lives but has also enriched mine, fostering a community bound by kindness and understanding.
