Vulnerability from Gestures
Anna K., President of the Glen Rock Chapter of GlamourGals, shares the amazing privilege of witnessing joy, empathy, and love that bridge generations as she serves her local seniors.
One visit in particular has stayed with me. I met a woman named DeeDee, whose optimism and love for dance lit up a room. She’s a regular at our makeovers and always makes time to chat and converse with the volunteers. One day, she shared how she witnessed her mother’s passing and explained how her mom had sparked her passion for dance and self-expression. Her mother was someone she deeply cherished and admired.
That moment revealed what GlamourGals is truly about: offering a safe space to share stories and remember memories. Amidst life’s adversity, we often overlook the power of being present for someone. But in those simple, vulnerable moments — whether we’re painting nails, doing their makeup, sharing a moment of laughter, or listening to someone’s pains — we’re overcoming generational barriers and learning from one another. We’re reminding our seniors that they are valued and loved. DeeDee’s story, and many others, have shown me that the greatest impact doesn’t come from grand gestures – it comes from small, genuine acts of kindness. GlamourGals has taught me to be an empathetic listener to people across generations and to make space for stories that deserve to be heard.
