The Power of Touch

Aqilah R., President of Benjamin N. Cardozo High School’s chapter, reflects on the connection and comfort shared through makeover events.

When I first joined GlamourGals, the world still felt hesitant. Visits had just started again after the pandemic. My first time at the senior home was masked, distanced, and filled with nerves. I remember standing there, unsure of what to say, afraid that my quiet nature would hold me back from connecting with the seniors.

Then, I met Velma. She had the warmest smile and the most beautiful singing voice. As I painted her nails, she began to hum and talk to me, like we’d known each other for years. Her presence was calming, and that moment, hand in hand, showed me what GlamourGals is really about. It’s not just the makeovers. It’s the connection, the comfort, the gentle way we show others they matter. That day, I realized the power of touch. It’s not just physical contact; it’s emotional closeness - the feeling of being seen, heard, and valued. A hand held during a conversation. A brush of polish. A shared laugh. These small, human gestures carry deep meaning. In a world where many seniors face loneliness and isolation, this presence becomes something powerful. Compassion doesn’t need to be loud. It just needs to be present.
