Overcoming Emotional Disconnect
Astrid R., President of the Bloomfield High School chapter, shares how GlamourGals has enriched her life and has taught her the value of leadership.
Moving away from my country, Dominican Republic, hasn't been just an emotional hardship, but also one that has influenced the way I think about relationships. When my parents told me that we were moving to a new country, the first thing that crossed my mind was the family we were leaving behind. I struggled with emotional connections for the longest time due to distance put between myself and my most valuable relationships.
Being exposed to GlamourGals has been the best thing that I have ever crossed paths with. In October of 2021, I remember being attracted not just by the array of pink awaiting me at the GG table, but at the mission that volunteers in the chapter were fulfilling. My first GG Visit was one of the events that secured my engagement and commitment to GlamourGals. Because we had moved away from my home country, my grandfather, Abuelo Radhame, had been isolated from both his daughters after losing my grandmother to cancer. I had met the most wonderful lady Charlotte, who had told me all about her magazine editing career. I remember thinking about my own grandparents, and imagined it was my late grandmother Lidia telling these stories. Being President of GlamourGals has taught me the value of leadership. Leadership does not just consist of leading others, but creating connections with people around you.
