Breaking Barriers

Helen X., Co-Founder and Vice President at Malden High School chapter, shares how GlamourGals has empowered her to surpass both generational and language barriers.

When I first Co-Founded GlamourGals at Malden High School with my friend, I didn’t think much of it and assumed it would be like any other club. One experience that really opened me up to being more interactive was a middle-aged woman I met at one of our events in 2024. With my very broken Cantonese and an ounce of confidence, I worked my way up to her and the rest was history. She told me about her family and how she lived in Malden for 12 years.

I felt deeply connected to her because this was the first time I had spoken a different language to a senior and in that moment it really felt like the breakthrough for bridging the generational gap between elders and the younger generation. Beyond that moment, my commitment to GlamourGals has sincerely deepened and I try my best to play my part in getting more students involved to feel the magic that happens between understanding the older generation. These types of connections are truly wonderful and shape our lessons as we grow up.
