The Glamour of Genuine Connection

Ivy L., president of Union County Vocational Technical Schools’ chapter, shares how the meaning of being beautiful has evolved for her.

I am a senior in high school, and I am a part of GlamourGals. I live a life of luxury–but not in the way you might imagine. Every month, I step into a new “home,” each one filled with a fabulous group of friends awaiting my arrival. As a GlamourGals volunteer, I thrive on the joy of giving stylish manicures to my cherished friends, many of whom are older in age. While most prefer muted, neutral shades, a few enjoy the bold pop of a striking color. Cradling their hands, I watch as their faces light up with the sheer delight of being pampered—those warm, gentle smiles are priceless. These aren’t merely manicures; they are moments of genuine connection and shared appreciation.

Being a GlamourGals volunteer has shown me that glamour is not just about polished nails and external appearances—it’s about kindness, compassion, and the simple act of showing up for others. It’s about the relationships we nurture and the ways we uplift one another. No matter where I’ll be in the future, I’ll be sure to bring the same spirit of care, laughter, and inclusion into my work.
