Communicating Language

Jocelyn D., a volunteer at Bloomfield High School, shares how her language closes the gap in loneliness that people feel.

It was my first time going to an event with GlamourGals. We had gone to the Mira Vie at Clifton to make mood boards and paint nails. They introduced us to the lovely ladies whom we were painting nails and chatting with. My eyes instantly went to the hispanic lady–I decided to walk towards her. She only spoke Spanish and she was happy to see I could too. She told me how lonely she felt even though there were so many other people there with her. She felt alone because everyone spoke English–not even a little Spanish. I felt like I was with my own grandmother. It made me realize how much I would take care of my grandmother as she got older. How I am going to appreciate my grandparents more. It inspired me to continue to be a GlamourGals volunteer and go to more events. Since then I always look and see if anyone needs help with struggling to speak Spanish.
