Comfort and Holiday Cheer

Kamila G., a volunteer at Bloomfield High School, describes her experience laughing and bonding with a senior who reminds her of her grandmother.

A memorable experience during a GG Senior Home Visit was talking to a senior named Claire. I had the best time talking to her; she was friendly, caring, and funny. We had the best time talking to each other about our families and even our favorite Christmas songs. This visit took place around Christmas time, so it was nice to bring holiday cheer to the seniors. I remember when I was talking to Claire about myself or sharing something funny; her laugh was something I would always remember. Even though I spoke to her for about fifteen or twenty minutes, I felt that I created a relationship with her. I felt a bond forming and I was entirely grateful for that. Her joy and laughter brought a smile to my face.

This relationship impacted my perspective on life because while talking to Claire, it felt like I was talking to my grandma. My grandma lived in Peru, and every time that I would go and visit, every conversation that I would have with her, there was always laughter involved. Talking to every senior puts me in a safe place where they can talk to me and I can talk to them. I am so fortunate to have Rachel Doyle, the founder of GlamourGals, who created this amazing foundation, because this is a way to recognize the loneliness seniors have. As a volunteer, I love to help end senior isolation and be involved.
