Stories of Wisdom
Kelley M., a volunteer at James Madison High School, recalls the advice that a senior gave her during a makeover event.
During a GG Senior Home visit, I had the opportunity to paint the most admirable senior's nails while also receiving great advice that I will cherish for years. While painting her nails with a stunning, bright, and glittery pink color, she declared it to be "a beautiful shade of pink ” As I carefully applied the nail polish, she began sharing stories about her life, her husband, and her youth. Who knew that a simple act, painting nails, could open a door to rich history and earnest advice?
This experience has impacted me in more ways than one to this day. Looking directly at me, she said, "Go to college, get a job, and enjoy your life while you’re young." This reinforced the importance of listening and connecting with others, furthermore reminding me that life is precious. That I have the choice to chase my passion to pursue a career in computer science. Her words of wisdom strengthened my focus on my education, alongside my career goals. This visit, originally an act of service, turned into a powerful life lesson. It shaped my perspective of life, reinforced my commitment to choose the path of my life, and was an experience I will remember throughout college.
