Intergenerational Advice
Maya H., President of the Danville Area’s chapter, reflects on important advice she has received from seniors at makeover events.
The massive growth I have experienced over these past three years as a chapter leader has been remarkable. Communicating with fellow officers and volunteers, learning through note-taking, and delegation have taught me better leadership skills. GlamourGals visits have become one of the main events that senior home residents look forward to each month. One senior home provided a list of seniors with the fewest visitors, allowing us to do one-on-one personal visits with each one.
We always do nails, themed bingo, a game, a craft, or a get-to-know-you exercise. One of my favorite things I have asked every senior I have been partnered with is: "What advice would you give to someone my age?" I recommend that everyone ask their seniors this. The ladies gave me some of the most profound stories and practical advice, such as: "Do not give up on the things you set out to do because it will come back around and be useful for your future," "don't dwell on it," and "climb every mountain."
