Inspiring and Impacting Others Through Service
Madysen P., President of Bay Port’s chapter, discusses how she made a lasting connection while giving a makeover at a senior home.
As an individual and a leader, GlamourGals has had a profound impact on me. I have learned the value of compassion and listening skills that I have used in other aspects of my life. Leading a team of volunteers has taught me to plan and communicate as I organize events and make sure everyone feels appreciated and encouraged. I have learned to share our mission and the results of our efforts. By touching the lives of the seniors, we serve to inspire others. This experience has also made me realize that there is a great deal of responsibility that comes with being an advocate for vulnerable populations and has made me seek opportunities that can bring about positive social change and community participation.
My first visit to a senior home was scary. I didn't know what to expect. I started painting a senior, Barb’s, nails. We got to talking and we got along really well. She had me write her name down so she could be paired with me the next time. I have done her nails ever since. The bond we have built is truly unbreakable. In general, I can say that GlamourGals has influenced my personality and who I want to be as a leader: a compassionate leader who wants to make a change. GlamourGals is crucial to my community as it targets the emotional and social needs of seniors who are likely to be lonely and isolated. It's inspiring that the younger generation wants to make a significant impact on our elders' quality of life.
