Individual Paths

Shaila Z., a volunteer at Townsend Harris High School, shares how a senior alleviated her worries regarding college.

I clearly remember a senior from one of the GG Senior Home Visits, her name was Selma and as soon as I sat down to start painting her nails I instantly felt at peace with her calming presence and kindness upon meeting me. She asked me about my plans for college and I told her how unsure I was and listed her a bunch of possible majors I was thinking of. She then told me all about her career path and the 3 different colleges she went to. She eventually became a librarian and was one for 20 years, which she discovered later in life was her passion.

Selma assured me that I shouldn't worry and that everything would fall into place, and that my true calling would make its appearance. Going home that day I felt so relieved because prior to this conversation I kept comparing myself to my classmates who I felt had everything planned out for their futures. I understood that life has a plan for us and that it will fall into place and instead of stressing about what that plan could be just let it take its course.
