Advice from Seniors

GG Volunteers share how residents from their senior home visits gave them powerful advice that changed their perspective on life.

I encountered an older gentleman who was living in the assisted living facility by himself. He told me how he lost his wife, his home, his car, and both of his kids. Everything was taken away from him, yet he was still so positive. He told me how to live life in gratitude, and I have looked at life differently since. Life brings ups and downs, and I learned that it is easier to overcome the lows when you appreciate the positive things you have in life. When you are thankful and practice gratitude, you will live a lot happier and realize all of the great things you have in life, even if they are as small as waking up to a new day. These wise words from this man have changed my perspective on life where I can proudly say that I am living a happier and more fulfilled life.

One thing I have learned from a senior is to never give up, but don’t overwork yourself. I learned that it takes hard work and determination to reach a goal in life. If I were to get overworked, I could lose my chance of completing my goal at hand. I should take breaks when needed and set smaller [stepping stones] for myself that can help me achieve my big goal at the end. This advice has helped me in both my school work and things at home like chores, when I want to save up money or even when I am planning something like a party. The senior I talked to changed my whole perspective on how I do things now, and I am so grateful for it.
