Following My Mother’s Footsteps
Ravinder K. from Rutgers University shares how her mother’s reverence towards seniors inspired her to join her school’s chapter of GlamourGals and advocate for a marginalized population.
The biggest motivation behind me joining GlamourGals is my mother. She always wanted to become a nurse but never had the opportunity to attend college. I've always seen her be kind and helpful towards older people. She has a soft spot in her heart for the elderly.
She worked as a Sales Associate at Macy's for 2 years and was promoted to a supervising position. During her time at Macy's, she constantly stood up for better treatment of the seniors. Later on, at the age of 40, my mom decided to work at a daycare center and help take care of the seniors, and she loves every bit of it!
Like my mother, I want to become more outspoken and advocate in favor of better treatment of seniors. Many times, especially in a public setting, I've seen people express annoyance towards seniors, such as when they struggle with modern technology or take longer to do simple things like walking.
I'm grateful to be a part of something so positive. My main goal through this journey will be to change the unwelcoming attitude towards seniors. People should step up to help seniors learn new technologies and beliefs, and in return, they will share their wisdom and experience with us. Let's all try to understand each other and break generational gaps.
