The Piano Man

The Rock Hill High School Chapter attended their first GG Senior Home Visit, forging bonds with resident Dave over the joys of music.

It was my first time going on a senior home visit, and I had a great time! In the beginning, I asked if I could play the piano, and they approved, but I was so nervous that I couldn’t get the notes right. Then after a while, a senior named Dave came by and taught me a song, which also allowed me to become more comfortable and courageous when playing the piano in public. It was the first time in 4 years that I had played the piano in public…[Dave] spoke of his past and how he learned the piano and the guitar. Later, he even showed me how he played the guitar. I was astonished by how all of the instruments he played were self-taught and very soothing to the ear.

It has been 3 days since the senior visit and meeting Dave is still the highlight of my week. He taught me how to play piano a little and told me things about life. He even spun humor into it. Thinking about his advice and his feelings about music is a new source of motivation. I want to pick up old skills from the past, like playing the piano and violin.
