Hofstra at Hempstead Housing Authority

On Friday, April 1st our Hofstra University chapter had the wonderful opportunity to visit Hempstead Housing Authority. Some volunteers have shared highlights from their experience and hopes for future events.

On April 1st, we went to the Hempstead Housing Authority to paint the nails of the seniors who live there. It was a little nerve-wracking because I am not very experienced with painting nails, however they turned out really good. I was able to paint the nails of two people, both of whom chose very pretty colors. It was such a fun experience. I hope we can do more nail painting events in the future. - Unaysah B.

On Friday, April 1st we got the chance to paint nails at Hempstead Housing Authority nearby campus. My friend Sidrah and I talked long with Opal, a senior whose laugh was infectious and had boundless positive energy radiating life. Opal and I bonded over being Pisces (the best Zodiac sign!!) while Sidrah found out that they both lived nearby in the same neighborhood and talked about how great the nearby park was. Opal showed us her ring, engraved with the names and birthstones of her family in a leaf-like pattern, and recommended we buy one as well to commemorate the GlamourGals experience today. Thanks to Opal, I learned that Opal was also my birthday month (March) birthstone. I grinned ear-to-ear hearing how beautiful she felt after today’s manicures as she choose a beautiful purple color. - Rachel P.

On Friday, April 1, I joined my fellow Hofstra GlamourGals at Hempstead Housing Authority to spend quality time with the seniors. We painted some of the senior’s nails, got to know them a bit, and had a fun time! Even though it was our first time at this senior home, and our first time meeting this group of women, we all got along so well and had great conversations. It was clear that our visit made their day a whole lot brighter, and they excitedly told us they looked forward to seeing us again soon. It was a really meaningful experience for me and I am also excited to return in the near future! - Eliana Z.

We can’t wait to continue volunteering at the nursing home and I can’t wait to coordinate more visits for the upcoming semester.
