What It’s Like Being a PR Officer

Mayar E., Origins High School PR Officer, describes her role in serving her GG chapter and shares some new perspectives she has gained from her experience.

GlamourGals is important to my community because it provides a sense of pride and community to our teen volunteer network. GlamourGals has given seniors in my community a place to be themselves and fight against senior isolation, so they never have to feel alone. We all need care and friendship, especially the seniors.

Being a Public Relations Officer in my senior year was a big and important matter for me. The community always needs young volunteers and leaders to stand up and help. My job as Public Relations Officer is to give ideas and strategies, post flyers, and communicate with my school volunteers in the GG chapter to create meetings and visits to the chateau. In addition, I was helping to recruit more volunteers for the GG chapter, enabling them with a similar experience to mine. On my first day visiting the chateau, I was excited, yet at the same time afraid to help because I had never helped out seniors. However, they made my day, sparking a love for going to the chateau, to help the seniors and hear them out. GlamourGals paved the way for me to see a different side of the little world I lived in and let me have a new experience. I realized that many seniors just wanted someone to talk to about their day and how they feel. In other words, they need somebody to care. I was painting their nails and talking to them and listening to them in order to make their day.

The GG experience helped me to communicate with seniors in my family and form a stronger connection with them.
