How Volunteering Inspires Future Careers

Kayleigh Y., a volunteer at Olmsted Falls High School, reflects on the connections she has made through GlamourGals and how it has impacted her future career goals.

Throughout my volunteer years at Sprenger Healthcare, I've connected with and shared many laughs with the seniors. One thing I never expected was to build a special bond with one of the residents. This is precisely what happened when I met Mary. On my first day, I sat down to do Mary's nails. She was sweet, funny, and direct. She always knew the right thing to say to make me laugh so hard that I almost always messed up her nails. She was also candid with me, whether it was something silly, like when she didn't like the color I picked out, or when describing some of her astute experiences, and wanting to give me advice. I always look forward to seeing Mary on Tuesdays. I know she looks forward to having her nails done and feeling pretty.

My experience with GlamourGals has led me to realize that I want to be a social worker, specializing in elder care. I always knew I wanted to be a social worker, but my connection with Mary ignited my passion for working with the elderly population. I am sad to leave Mary and everyone at Sprenger Healthcare when I graduate in May, but I look forward to my future career and building more special relationships like the ones formed through GlamourGals. It was an honor to be a member of something so special and meaningful to me.
