Remembering Roots

Treasurer of the Atlantic County Institute Of Technology chapter, Tamara F., shares the growth she’s witnessed in her chapter as well as the impact of her first GlamourGals experience.

For me, GlamourGals began as a fun activity I could do after school for some volunteer experience; however, it has become so much more. I have found community, fulfillment, and confidence in myself through the amazing network of people the GlamourGals is. It still feels surreal being one of the people who is able to help others, whether it is figuring out how to work the website, turn in papers, or sign up for fundraisers; these simple tasks mean a lot for people's participation.

During one of my chapter's senior home visits, we walked in and immediately set up everything so smoothly. At that moment, I thought about how far we have come from our first few awkward visits. As leaders, we have learned how to take initiative for things to run smoothly. Every time we visit, I think about my first nursing home visit two years ago. I met Ruth, who was over a hundred years old and spoke about how different life was when she was younger. Getting to see the world through a different perspective in those 20 minutes I painted her nails gave me a whole new appreciation for GlamourGals.
