Why Shannon serves with GlamourGals

Shannon Murphy is a secondary Mathematics and Computer Science Teacher. She has an MAT in Mathematics 7-12 from Stony Brook University and a BA in Mathematics from CUNY Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. She is also certified to teach Yoga and SEL (Social-Emotional Learning). She is passionate about teaching adolescents, as well as empowering girls who are interested in STEM fields.

Shannon began her involvement with GlamourGals in 2015 as a summer intern, then as a part-time program assistant. After continuing to volunteer with GlamourGals, she had the honor of joining the Advisory Board in 2020. She loves everything that GlamourGals stands for, and is proud to support such a wonderful organization.

3 Questions With Shannon

Who is the senior in your own life who shaped you?

"The senior in my life who shaped me was my grandpa. He was my very best friend, and passed in 2015. I would sleep over his house all the time on my summers home from college, and we would do everything together. My favorite was setting up his Christmas village in December, and making pickles with his home-grown cucumbers. My Pop-Pop was a man who went through a lot in his life, but always led with love and treated everyone with kindness. He helped to shape me into the person I am today, and was one of the reasons I originally got involved with GlamourGals.”

What’s your “main character energy” song?

"My "main character energy" song is Under Pressure by Queen. Any time I feel stressed, I put this song on and sing along as loud as I can. It never fails to relax me, and makes me feel like I can conquer any challenges that come my way!”

What do GlamourGals teen volunteers teach you?

"GlamourGals teen volunteers have taught me so much over the years. I think the biggest thing I have learned from them is that today's teens are going to create an amazing future. Today's children become tomorrow's leaders, and the volunteers I have met show me that we are about to have a generation of compassionate leaders entering the world. I am consistently impressed by their creativity when it comes to overcoming challenges, as well as their dedication to and care for the seniors they serve. I know these teens will grow up to do amazing things, and they will do them with kindness, innovation, and compassion.”
