3 Questions With Stephanie

Why does ending elder loneliness matter to you personally?

"My grandfather was one of the most impactful people in my life, and I had the privilege of always living close to him. As he aged, I watched his world slowly become smaller. In his prime, he could captivate a room—he was someone people wanted to know and hear from. As his memory faded, his stories began to blend with reality, and that confidence softened into a sweet old man who was easier for the world to overlook.

But I knew the person and the stories that were still inside him. That experience taught me that every elder carries a lifetime of stories, wisdom, and experiences. As they get older, sometimes we just have to try a little harder to draw those stories out—and remind them that they are still seen and valued.

If a teen volunteer gave you a makeover, what would you ask them about their life?

"I’d ask them what moments make them feel most alive. When do they feel completely present, happy, and connected to the people around them? I’d encourage them to notice those moments and build a life filled with the people and experiences that bring them back to that feeling.

What’s the best piece of advice a senior ever gave you?

"My grandfather always told me, ‘Always take 51% in a business deal.’ While he meant it literally, I’ve come to see a bigger lesson in it: take ownership of your life. Whether it’s your career, your passions, or something you’re building, don’t be afraid to take control, make decisions, and create the life you want."
